Summary:

WAMU 88.5 is a public media station owned and operated by American University. WAMU is the source for local, regional and NPR news and original programs in Washington DC. Since 1961, WAMU has been amplifying voices and sharing stories from the many neighborhoods and communities in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

As a part of the Marketing and Brand Engagement team, the Advancement and Marketing Writer develops written communication for WAMU fundraising, marketing, and outreach purposes and is responsible for creating a nuanced voice and tone for each unique channel that remains true to the overall WAMU brand. This includes drafting appeals, marketing material copy, newsletters, campaign copy, promotional copy, and the annual report.  

 

This position creates original written marketing and fundraising content for direct mail, email, newsletters, brochures, and others. This position is also responsible for drafting high level communication from the General Manager to external stakeholders and coordinates with Advancement and Admin team members in preparing briefing books as needed to support the GM.  

Essential Functions:

1.) Marketing Writing and Content Production

  • Create compelling, creative content for use in WAMU marketing objectives: marketing collateral, news and magazine stories, video scripts, event messaging, and web and social content.

  • Conceptualize and draft new communications to deepen constituents’ relationship with WAMU. 

2.) Fundraising Writing and Content Production

  • Create compelling, creative content for use in WAMU fundraising objectives: draft and edit solicitations and appeals, stewardship communications, fundraising marketing collateral for the 1961 Society, newsletters, and events 

3.) Executive Communication Support

  • Collaborate with WAMU leadership on the drafting of high-level communications including speeches, presentations, and briefing books. 

 

4.) Annual Impact Report

  • Collaborate with WAMU Leadership Team, Advancement, Content, and Finance teams to draft annual impact report.

  • Research creative and traditional delivery methods and draft according to maximize reach. 

  

5.) Internal Communication

  • Ensure internal communication is consistent.

  • Manage internal television screens for communicating key ideas and information to internal and small external audiences.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Full-Time.

  • 35 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $73,000 - $77,000 annually.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated ability as a versatile and persuasive writer with excellent grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment and proven history of successful collaboration across teams and/or units.

  • Proficiency with MS Office programs including MS Word and MS PowerPoint; capable of handling most letter writing, printing, and mailing, and basic desktop publishing.

  • Excellent customer service skills (including responding quickly, diplomatically, thoughtfully, and creatively to feedback from clients, while keeping the project headed toward the agreed-upon goal).

  • Extremely high level of professionalism: superior tact, discretion, and sensitivity to confidential information.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience​.

  • Bachelors degree in creative writing, communication, public affairs, or closely related degree.

  • Previous experience writing for non-profit organizations.

  • Skill using Adobe Creative Suite.
