About the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service

The mission of the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service is to prepare leaders for the exciting and complex work of creating social impact. We serve graduate students across campus with our programs and courses. Our faculty teach and conduct research on a variety of topics, including: volunteerism, nonprofit leadership, arts and cultural policy, hybrid intelligence, global affairs, and more. Our alumni work at all levels of leadership advancing social causes and delivering high quality programs for their communities. Being located within the LBJ School of Public Affairs also means having access to events and speakers discussing current social and political issues.

Purpose

The RGK Center is seeking a student writer to produce written content for the Center’s website and social media channels. The student writer should be comfortable interviewing graduate students, alumni, and faculty of the Center and will be expected to write compelling, short-form articles for publication on the Center’s website. This position will report to and work closely with the Student Program Manager for the RGK Center. The purpose of this job is to be an excellent storyteller of how people connected with the RGK Center are making a difference in their communities.

Responsibilities:

1) Collaborate with RGK staff to conduct interviews and write articles related to the Center’s faculty, students, and alumni that align with the Center’s communications strategy. Content may include:

  • Course spotlights

  • Alumni and student spotlights

  • Event recaps

  • Faculty research briefs

2) Additional duties may include:

  • Collaborating with student videographer to produce multimedia stories

  • Collaborating with other student workers/staff to develop content for the Center’s Instagram and LinkedIn pages

  • Attending and supporting Center events, as available

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong writing and interviewing skills

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to make deadline

  • Ability to work independently with some supervision

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Journalism or related field

  • Experience working/volunteering with nonprofits or an interest in the nonprofit sector

Hourly Pay Rate

$17 per hour

Working Conditions

  • Remote, with some in-person meetings and events

  • Usual office environment
