The SEO Content Writer is responsible for implementing SEO strategies; writing website copy; and building, updating, and maintaining web pages for Liberty University. The SEO Content Writer can quickly produce high-quality written content using provided resources and original research to ensure the university’s website stays relevant, accurate, and up to date. Key responsibilities include conducting keyword research, revising existing web pages, writing and building new web pages, and tracking search rankings. Other special projects and analysis as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform keyword research in coordination with Liberty University’s business objectives to optimize existing content and uncover new opportunities.
  • Write original, powerful SEO content for program pages, degree pages, school pages, and other pages that may be developed in coordination with Liberty University’s business objectives.
  • Revise and rewrite existing web pages to optimize SEO value, improve readability, and increase word count.
  • Research and write new web pages for new degrees and various projects while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Proofread and edit written web content for spelling, grammar, syntax, punctuation, and overall structure/flow.
  • Ensure web pages comply with AP format and the Liberty University verbal brand and style guide.
  • Review and update web content for relevance, accuracy, keyword optimization, ranking goals, and university campaigns/initiatives.
  • Maintain, monitor, and use trustworthy resources to fact-check statistics, claims, and all other relevant facts on the website.
  • Build and manage web pages in WordPress.
  • Assist in monitoring keyword rankings and traffic for priority pages; flag issues or performance drops for further review.
  • Use project management tools effectively to track progress and completion of tasks.
  • Strictly adhere to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.
  • Implement link-building campaigns in coordination with Liberty University’s SEO goals.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Provide recommendations and execute strategies for content development in coordination with SEO goals.
  • Keep pace with SEO, search engine, and internet marketing industry trends and developments.
  • Oversee content quality control by reviewing the work of peers for SEO alignment, brand consistency, accuracy, and adherence to best practices.
  • Mentor and train team members on SEO techniques, content optimization strategies, and evolving best practices to ensure department-wide growth in SEO competency.
  • Analyze performance trends via web analytics dashboards and search tools. Translate findings into actionable strategies that align with Liberty University’s goals.
  • Conduct in-depth evaluations of search engine performance and competitor rankings to inform long-term SEO strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALS

Education and Experience

Tier 1

  • High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism, English, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 0-1 years of experience
  • Demonstrable writing ability, ideally with samples or a writing portfolio.
  • Strong command of the English language and standard grammar conventions.
  • Ability to write clearly for different target audiences.
  • Interest in SEO, content strategy, or digital marketing.
  • Strong attention to detail, proofreading skills, and a desire to produce high-quality work.
  • Capable of multitasking and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Motivated, dependable, and open to learning new skills and technologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Tier 2

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in marketing, communication, journalism, English, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience writing for the web (e.g., blogs, company websites, higher education, or agency settings).
  • A strong writing portfolio demonstrating SEO best practices, audience awareness, and performance-focused content.
  • Proven ability to adapt tone and messaging across multiple audiences and content formats.
  • Passion for SEO and content strategy, with a track record of implementing successful tactics.
  • Advanced organizational and time management skills, including experience managing projects independently.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using SEO and analytics tools to inform decisions.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and the ability to offer strategic insights in content planning.
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, and ability to mentor others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting ideas and recommendations to peers or stakeholders.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting.  It is well lighted, and the noise level is moderate.  Working environment may include facilitation of events outdoors occasionally.  

Driving Requirements

If the employee is required to travel in performing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) may be required for travel.  Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.
