About UpRoot

UpRoot is a newly launched communications hub dedicated to reclaiming the story of our food from Big Ag. We are a fiscally sponsored project of EarthShare, a 501(c)3 organization.

By using social media and research on how people think, we work with everyday heroes–like doctors, farmers, parents, and more–to build power and lead the way to a healthier, more honest food system.

We believe that knowledge is power, and the power over our food will change when we begin to have an honest conversation. But we don’t just talk about the problem; we provide the strategic infrastructure to help more people hear about it and understand it. Our work is built on three essential pillars designed to turn information into influence.

1. Strategic Support

The corporate food giants spend billions on "spin"—sophisticated messaging designed to protect their interests. UpRoot serves as a strategic resource for everyday heroes working to upend the status quo and build a healthier future. We do this by providing a space to connect, coordinate, and access real-time insights on the best ways to combat that spin–offering the tools, talking points, and data needed to cut through the noise and speak with authority.

2. Public Sentiment

To see change, we must meet people where they are and join the conversation. UpRoot conducts ongoing research to track what average Americans actually think and feel about their food. This research allows us to craft messages that resonate with real people, ensuring the work remains grounded in cultural realities.

3. The Media Gap

Legacy media often perpetuates myths about our food system and amplifies Big Ag narratives as truth. This leaves the public with an information gap between the “news” and their reality. UpRoot uses our own communication platforms to shine a light on specific weaknesses and corporate overreach that aren't discussed in traditional news cycles and amplify storytellers trying to break through the noise. By identifying these gaps, we bring critical issues into the spotlight and lead a more honest, urgent conversation about the future of our food.

The Role

As we are in a dynamic start-up phase, we are looking for more than just a manager; we need a thought partner who is excited to help build our digital infrastructure from the ground up. This is a highly collaborative role where you will work closely with the UpRoot leadership team on engaging digital storytelling based on the premise that choices about our food belong to the American people, not corporate boardrooms.

You will serve in three primary capacities: as our lead digital strategist, as a consistent, authentic face for our brand and as the technical manager creating and posting digital content across multiple platforms.

Core Responsibilities

Strategy, Creation & Management

  • Content Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive content calendar.
  • Execution: Create and schedule posts across platforms (minimum 5x per week).
  • Production: Script content for UpRoot and its partners.
  • Editing: Perform basic video editing or collaborate with an editor to ensure high-quality output.
  • Community Engagement: Respond to comments/DMs and manage ManyChat integrations to foster a vibrant community.
  • Substack Management: Collaborate with UpRoot leadership on weekly Substack posts.
  • Analytics: Monitor performance, track engagement, and adjust strategies based on data.

On-Camera Brand Ambassador

  • Hosting: Act as a consistent face for UpRoot by hosting various videos.
  • Education: Deliver policy breakdowns and create introduction/explainer content.
  • Newsroom Mentality: Provide rapid response content to relevant breaking news.
  • Output: Produce approximately 4 videos per week.

Requirements

  • Experience: 2 or more years of social media experience, preferably within the advocacy or nonprofit sectors, but other experience including building a personal social media brand will be considered.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in video editing, scripting, content strategy, and email marketing with a willingness to learn and adapt to the latest tools.
  • Communication: Exceptional writing and storytelling abilities with the skill to explain complex policy topics simply.
  • Presence: Comfortable and authentic on-camera.
  • Mindset: A self-starter who can execute with direction while thriving in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Subject Matter Interest: A preferred understanding of food systems, policy, or social justice advocacy.

How to Apply

To apply, please send a resume and a brief explanation of why you are passionate about this work (no more than 200 words) in a single PDF. We will follow up with a request for an original short-form video on an issue you care deeply about (no more than 90 seconds) if you are being considered for an interview.
