Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) is seeking to hire a motivated, detail-oriented student content writer to help share compelling stories about our students, researchers, and faculty. This position offers hands-on experience in journalistic interviewing, long-form content writing, and digital communications.

As part of the Marketing and Communications (MarCom) team, you will research and write feature stories, news releases, and media advisories; assist with media relations and marketing events; and contribute content across various digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller with solid writing skills who communicates effectively, works well in a team environment, and thrives as a self-starter. Knowledge of photography, videography, and social media platforms is a plus. Responsibilities

  • Research, write, and edit editorial content of varying lengths for Nevada Today, e-newsletters, the annual report, and other digital or print publications

  • Conduct professional interviews to gather quotes and context; identify multimedia elements (photos or videos) to strengthen stories

  • Apply AP style and follow brand guidelines to ensure clarity, accuracy, and a consistent voice

  • Draft scripts for multimedia pieces based on recorded interviews

  • Learn and use technical system (CMS) to upload stories to Nevada Today; includes required training and shadowing

  • Learn and use technical system (Emma) to prepare and publish the Nevada Medicine Weekly e-newsletter

  • Pull monthly analytics reports on digital engagement and readership

  • Draft captions, repurpose stories into posts, and help develop social media content

  • Attend weekly Marketing and Communications team meeting and contribute story ideas

  • Support the creation of promotional materials such as flyers, brochures, and other branded collateral

  • Assist during photo and video shoots by helping capture background details or drafting supporting copy

  • Help with event promotion and planning as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student of the University of Nevada, Reno.

  • Candidate must have strong writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail.

  • Candidate must have the ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

  • Candidate must have excellent communication skills and a proactive attitude.

  • Candidate must be flexible and able to adapt to last-minute requests or changes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidate has knowledge of/interest in the School of Medicine, research, and related health care fields

  • Candidate is majoring in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, English, or related fields

Knowledge of:

  • Journalistic writing, including AP style

  • Marketing-based writing techniques

  • Higher education issues and audiences

  • Standard English/grammar usage

Skills:

  • Desktop publishing experience, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite

  • Use of social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Linked In, X

  • Excellent oral and written communication

Ability to:

  • Write purposely and persuasively, and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences

  • Maintain professional business and work ethics and standards

  • Work with, engage, and provide accurate and appropriate representations of a diverse population

  • Manage, prioritize, and complete multiple projects/tasks in an efficient and timely manner while maintaining focus on organizational goals

Schedule

Part-time, up to 20 hours per week during regular business hours (9 a.m.–5 p.m.). Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required to support milestone events and special projects.
