Job Description Summary

The Communications Content Manager will support strategic communications objectives by shaping and sharing the voice of Shawnee State across multiple audiences and platforms. This position is responsible for creating and coordinating compelling content for internal and external communications, supporting public relations and marketing efforts, and connecting audiences to the SSU brand. Working closely with the Director of Communications and departments across the institution, this position ensures consistent messaging that spotlights student success and increases the profile of SSU leadership, faculty, programs, and initiatives. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

FUNCTIONS:
  1. Content Strategy & Planning: Develop and implement content strategies aligned with brand, enrollment, and communications goals and the University Strategic Plan. 
  2. Content Development & Storytelling: Create and curate engaging written, visual, and digital content for press releases, newsletters, social media, websites, publications, and marketing materials. 
  3. Marketing Communications & Publications: Create content for promotional materials, campaigns, and publications tied to enrollment, fundraising, and brand reputation goals.
  4. Internal Communications: Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep faculty, staff, and students informed and engaged. 
  5. External Communications & Media Relations: Develop and implement multi-channel communication strategies for external audiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Content Strategy & Planning: Develop and implement content strategies aligned with brand, enrollment, and communications goals and the University Strategic Plan.
    • Work with the Director of Communications and key stakeholders to develop and implement content strategies to achieve established goals and objectives. 
    • Create and manage editorial calendars that include cross-channel messaging for news and social outlets, internal communications, e-newsletters and publications to internal and external audiences, working with the Communications team.
    • Collaborate with communications, marketing, and enrollment teams to ensure content aligns with brand guidelines.
  1. Content Development & Storytelling: Create and curate engaging written, visual, and digital content for press releases, newsletters, publications, and marketing materials.
    • Write, edit, and curate written, visual, and digital content for press releases, newsletters, publications, and marketing materials.
    • Create messaging that reflects SSU’s tone, brand, and values.
    • Identify and share stories that highlight student, faculty, staff, and community impact.
  2. Marketing Communications & Publications: Create content for promotional materials, campaigns, and publications tied to enrollment, fundraising, and brand reputation goals.
    • Create and manage production of marketing communications materials from conception to distribution.
    • Plan, write, and direct production of publications – including two Shawnee Magazines a year; two annual reports; and a community “brag book.”
    • Create and maintain year-long production schedules with established deadlines and areas of responsibility, working closely with the Director of Communications, freelancers, and outside vendors.
  3. Internal Communications: Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep faculty, staff, and students informed and engaged.
    • Create and manage consistent messages for faculty, staff, and students to keep them informed about the university and engaged in its progress.
    • Manage communication channels specific to internal audiences, including the SSU app, email communication platforms, and Shawnee Connect intranet.
    • Work with Human Resources to provide guidelines and training for the Shawnee Connect intranet.
  4. External Communications: Develop and implement multi-channel communication strategies for external audiences.
    • Write, edit, and distribute press releases, maintaining relationships with local reporters and news sources. 
    • Coordinate response to news media requests, working with the Director and the Chief Communications Officer. 

 

Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Writing, public relations strategies and tactics.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field 
  2. Two to three years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience with photography and videography
