This is position is located in the Office of Communications & Public Relations, Richland County. 

Are you the one?  We are looking for a Visual/Digital Media Director (Content Director) who, under limited supervision of the Director of Strategic Communications, the Visual/Digital Media Director supports the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ (SCDHHS) Office of Communications and Public Relations. This position assists in the development of communications material, with an emphasis on digital communications, in support of the agency’s communications strategy. This position will advise Office of Communications and Public Relations leadership on the layout and usability of the content on the agency’s website(s) and coordinate with the agency’s subject matter experts to ensure content is accurate and current. This position will ensure all website content is on-brand, consistent with the agency’s priority messages and compliant with relevant state and federal requirements. This position will also assist in designing and developing other agency-branded digital assets.
  • Develops a customer-focused web content strategy that supports the goals of improving access to and accuracy and relevance of information across the agency’s website. Maintains frequent contact with program area leaders and business owners to ensure content on the agency’s website is consistent across pages, accurate and up to date.
  • Leads development of well-written materials to be used by the agency in explaining and promotion its programs and initiatives to internal and external audiences. Develops relationships with program area leaders to create easy-to-understand, audience-appropriate content for the agency’s website. Works with Office of Communications and Public Relations, IT, program area leaders and business owners to review existing website content for usability, accuracy and timeliness. Supports supervisor and program areas with collecting and drafting material to fulfill agency’s public information needs.
  • Supports development of well-written materials to be used by the agency in explaining and promoting its programs and initiatives to internal and external audiences. Supports the development of variety of communication deliverables in a time-sensitive manner while ensuring accuracy, consistency, alignment with the agency style guide and audience-appropriate messaging. Collaborates in the development and editing of PowerPoints, letters, messaging documents, reports and other deliverables to ensure material has been properly reviewed and vetted. Enforces the Office of Communications’ “Rule of Two” review protocol.
  • Works with program areas across the agency to design and produce collateral and visual materials that support the agency’s communications strategy and adhere to the agency’s style guide. Proactively collaborates with program areas to identify marketing goals and meet marketing and branding functional and operational needs. Keeps abreast of marketing trends and recommends new material and media types to engage with specific identified audiences.
  • Leads or supports other projects proactively or as assigned by Office of Communications and Public Relations leadership. Continuously engages in process improvement to support Agency, Division, and Office-wide strategies, objectives, and initiatives. Collaborates with other agency team members in research, development, implementation, and evaluation activities for services, projects, and agency initiatives as assigned. Performs other related duties as required.
  • Attends and participates in relevant opportunities for professional development and training. Demonstrates utilization and application of new skills learned to improve effectiveness and efficiency within assigned responsibilities.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, visual communications, web design, digital media or a related field and three (3) years of relevant work experience, including experience maintaining content on a public-facing website.

Bachelor's degree must be from a higher education institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education & Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Must have proficient organizational and communication (both verbal and written) skills and proficiency in web writing and basic web design. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. 
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement. 
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and is customer service oriented.
  • Proficiency in design programs (e.g. Adobe InDesign) is a plus.
